When we talk about Buenos Aires, our first thought is tango, leather articles, commerce, sea, beautiful architecture and a Latin-American city that seems to be ahead of its sisters in many aspects.

Buenos Aires offers many attractions for its visitors, who go to the city attracted by the nostalgic sensuality of its typical dance, the tango, an urban dance from De La Plata River, with enchanting movements. The tango’s charm and magic has goes beyond boundaries, so the capital is an excellent chance to discover it and enjoy with its exquisite music, where the main actor is the string instrument, bandoneon.

Another thing about Buenos Aires is its beautiful architecture; with a remarkable french influence that can be appreciated in its street and buildings. The establishment of many immigrants from France, Italy and Portugal developed a mixed culture in Argentina and even a special language called lunfardo, used to write the lyrics of tango. This influence is also noted in the gastronomy and popular traditions.

This city also counts with interesting districts to discover, like San Telmo, with its antiques and tango ballrooms. The city’s downtown is located in the famous Plaza de Mayo square, where is also Casa Rosada, the Government Building. In the same place there are the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Cabildo and Argentina’s National Bank.

If you follow De Mayo Avenue, you will get to National Congress (the Parliament House) and in the surroundings you will see many beautiful buildings with finest architecture, squares decorated with monuments and sculptures; and a signed reproduction of The Thinker, of Rodin.

La Boca district is the immigrant’s neighborhood. Here you will find the famous sidewalk, Caminito, a lot of museums, theaters, the Boca Juniors soccer team field, “La Bombonera” and a beautiful avenue by the port.

Some other important district is Recoleta, a neighborhood with many cultural buildings like the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library and the Graveyard, a place where are the rests of presidents and other important celebrities of the country. Palermo is another main district of the city and there is the Latin-American Art Museum, the Zoo and the Planetarium.

Corrientes Avenue is the center of bohemia and spectacle in the city, with many theaters like San Martín and Luna Park Stadium. In the intersection of Corrientes Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue it is located the Obelisk, a monument that is a symbol of Buenos Aires in the world.

Other interesting place to discover is Colon Theater, a great building from the XIX century, with marble floor, amazing vitreaux and elegant halls. Colon Theater also has an Arts Institute, with important students from it and a public library, with a complete bibliography with many titles referent to music and arts, besides the full collection of specialized magazines in these subjects.

The modern architecture can be appreciated in Puerto Madero district, with its skyscrapers built in the last decade. One of them is the remarkable Espacial Tower, with 220 meters of height, which is located in the Entertainment Park of Buenos Aires.

It is a fantastic idea to have parties throughout the year – any excuse will do to uplift the spirits of friends and family! Why not be original and hold an April Fools party? Below are some unique ideas for an April Fools party:

“It is to laugh” is a very lively game for an April Fool Party. The players form a circle, taking hold of hands, and circle around one of the players who is blindfolded and holds a staff or a cane. When he raps on the floor with the cane they all stand still. He then points the cane toward some one, saying: “It is to laugh”.

The person touched by the cane, or nearest to it, places the end of the cane close to his mouth and laughs. If his name is guessed by the player in the center they change places and circle again; if not, they circle until the player in the center succeeds in naming the owner of the laugh.

Each guest is provided with a sheet of white paper and scissors and is asked to cut out a goose. After all are cut pin them to a sheet of black calico, and select judges to choose the best. This produces a great deal of fun, as some of the figures are of times grotesque.

The best goose is given a large china or bisque goose in a nest of cotton; beside it a yellow china or candy egg, bearing this inscription: ” The goose that laid the golden egg”. The one making the most ridiculous goose receives a tall jester’s cap, bearing the words, “What a goose!” which he or he must wear throughout the evening.

One room may be devoted to the Great White Prophet. Here is a huge draped figure all in white, with a white mask and seated on a high white throne. The guests are brought to this room one by one and told that they must kneel down before the Prophet, and, bowing three times, must repeat : “Great White Prophet, what have I done?” The answer conues in a sepulchral voice: “You have made a fool of yourself”.

You might next announce that you have a picture that you would like to show, that it has given you a great deal of pleasure, and doubtless will give the others as much.

Withdraw a curtain, revealing a mirror with “April Fool ” written on it with soap, when you have one or two expectant persons in front of it.

In the same room might be arranged an Art Gallery, using the following Fake Exhibits:
“Fifty Views of Washington” Fifty two-cent stamps.
“Fifty Views of the Panama Canal” Fifty Panama stamps.
“Fifty Points in Colorado” A sketch of Colorado with fifty dots.
“Among the Rockies” Several rocking chairs (doll furniture and others).
Place a large letter “C” on each end of a strip of cardboard which must stand north and south. The letter at the north end is “The North Sea,” and “Below the North Sea” is the lower letter.
General Cobb and his Colonels A cob of corn.
The Bust of a Commentator A potato.
The American Elevator A yeast cake.
The Rose of Castile Castile soap in rows.
A Swimming Match A match in a glass of water.
The Peacemakers A pair of scissors.
Study in Black and White A piece of chalk and coal.
A Diamond Pin A dime and pin.
A Pair of Slippers Banana peels.
Extracts From Many Pens A penwiper.
The Unopened Letter The letter “O”.

Burlesque tableaux of well-known historical or legendary incidents will be found a capital form of amusement. Although they should be thought out, they need not necessarily be rehearsed in advance. This entertainment should come as a complete surprise to the larger portion of the guests that is, to all but those who take part.

Let the announcer give the title of the tableau in stentorian tones, with his megaphone, just before the folding doors are opened or the curtains drawn back.

For the tableaux you might try ” Bluebeard’s Wives.” Bluebeard is seen standing, sword in hand, while around him on the curtain hang the heads of the ill-fated spouses. To produce the heads, cut holes in the sheet and let the actors thrust their heads through these, after which fasten the loosened hair to the curtain around the head with a safety pin. This tableau would be startling were it not for a sign reading, ” We Suffered in the Cause of Votes for Women,” or anything else which is innocent and gives the tableau a humorous twist.

Another one might be “Queen Elizabeth and Sir Walter Raleigh” in the cloak-spreading incident greatly marred by the enormous pasteboard noses worn by the knight and the queen, while Elizabeth carries a large umbrella for which history offers no excuses. Follow this with a ” Midsummer Night’s Dream,” where you can show a sleeper, in funny cotton nightcap with large tassel, awakened from his peaceful slumber by an elephantine mosquito made of raw cotton and crepe paper. The dreamer’s panic is vividly suggested by his attitude.

“Cinderella” and the little glass slipper must not be overlooked. In this tableau the prince kneels before the celebrated heroine of the chimney corner and extends upon his hand a tiny slipper, while Cinderella extends in competition a foot padded out to proportions truly gigantic in comparison.

April Fools Deocorations:
The decorations consist of spring flowers and ferns, yellow and white predominating, it being the nearest approach to sunlight and giving opportunity to use the bright little crocuses and daffodils, with white narcissuses to give delicate tones. For the table these colors should also prevail.

In the center place a large white or yellow cake surmounted by a toy jester’s figure, with white and yellow ribbons festooned from his pointed cap to the table below, held in place by small white cotton geese. Vases of daffodils and narcissuses, and yellow shades for lamps or candles, may be used should the day be cloudy.

China of white and gold would add a charm to this table. White and gold bonbon dishes, or ordinary dishes might be covered with crepe paper, some yellow, some white, tied with white and yellow ribbons. These should contain small candies hidden under a layer of white beans, coffee grains, rice or other grains.

Ordinary refreshments may be served on dishes not ordinarily used for that particular purpose. Use bowls or soup dishes instead of cups and saucers, vegetable dishes, cups, etc., where plates or platters should be used. The clever hostess will, no doubt, think of many ways, wise and otherwise, to serve refreshments on such an occasion.

Another good idea for table decoration is a wonderful “floral” centerpiece composed of potato and radish roses nestled amid parsley and celery-top foliage. The place-cards may be adorned with miniature coin purses, empty save for a card, inscribed “April Fool”.

The napkins should be folded in the form of fool’s caps, and the favors might be miniature jester’s baubles consisting of small bisque doll heads dressed in cap and bells and fastened to the ends of short, ribbon-wound wands. Jester’s sticks may be sticks of red and white peppermint candy tied with strips of red baby ribbon, to which tiny bells are attached.

Red and White Menu:
If your color scheme is red and white for your table, carry out the same idea in your menu, which would be :
Lobster Canape
Cream of Celery Soup
Chicken en Casserole, with Vegetables
Lettuce Salad, Garnished with Beets and Mayonnaise
April Fool Dainty
Cream Cheese and Crackers
Coffee

The ” April Fool Dainty ” may be vanilla or lemon sherbet, ice, or ice cream frozen in cone shapes. These are each covered with a miniature fool’s hat. As this course is served, the hostess might warn her guests of the significance of the day, and she may rest assured each guest will lift the little hat ever so gingerly.

Blue Points on the Half Shell
Bouillon Crackers
Salted Nuts
Roast Pork Tenderloin Fish Apple Sauce
Dressing Potato Puffs
Duck Fruit Salad
Bavarian Cream Coffee Fancy Cakes

“Blue points on the half shell” are half eggshells with points on them made with blue pencil. “Bouillon” is plain water, the “crackers” are fire crackers, and the “salted nuts” the nuts belonging to iron bolts, heavily sprinkled with salt. The “duck” is a square of duck cloth, while the “fruit salad” is a bona-fide dish served in orange cups, the cut-off piece being replaced so as to conceal the contents. The “fancy cakes” are sample cakes of toilet soap. Guest-size or hotel-size cakes may be used. If one wishes to serve a complete menu, substitutes for the mock dishes may be served as soon as they are removed from the table.

If you want to take sports to a whole new exciting level, maybe skydiving is what you are looking for. This extreme sport, along with bungee jumping, cliff diving, paragliding and many others that let you experience being up in mid air, is best for people who love heights and that exhilarating rush of adrenaline in the bloodstream.

Earlier forms of the parachute

It is believed that parachutes were used in Ancient China way back during the 1100s, and parachute-like sketches and devices were said to have conceived by Leonardo da Vinci. However, parachutists worldwide give the credit to French inventor Andre Jacques Garnerin as the one who made the first parachute. This had a support to keep the chute open and a basket to hold the diver. In 1979, he made the very first parachute jump from a balloon over Paris, later on followed by jumps in France and England.

The development of the flexible parachute followed, this time featuring a trapeze bar instead of a basket. Thomas Baldwin, an American inventor, became the first American to have descended from a balloon with a parachute in 1987. Leslie Irvin, another American, smartened up the design with his hand-operated chute, and made a free-fall jump in Ohio in 1919, revolutionized parachuting and paved the way for a new sport.

Valuable military contribution

When the Wright Brothers made the first aircraft flight in 1903, however, no developments were made on parachute designs. Barnstormers, who were aerial performers traveling throughout the US every year and whose specialty was jumping in parachutes, gave the aviators and parachutist during the World War I one of those light bulb moments. The military began using parachutes in their missions during World War I, serving as fast get away for observers on balloons, who drew enemy fire from up above enemy territories.

World War II used parachute-equipped soldiers – paratroopers. Paratroopers were employed on D-Day – the invasion of Normandy, France – on June 6, 1944, where more than 1,000 transports dropped them to secure the flanks and beach exits on the assault area.

The excess of unused nylon parachutes after World War II and military sport parachuting associations by the US Army paved the way for parachute diving in the United States as a form of leisure activity. Experimentation with aerodynamics, such as coming up with radical modifications and new designs and materials that improved steering and flight all together, led to enhanced parachutes suited for extreme sports use.

Modern developments

Apart from use of sport skydivers, various parachute designs – such as the military HAHO (high altitude, high opening) designs, smoke jumping designs, and other structures and equipment for two- and four-person tandem diving – were developed for different functions. The HAHO allows soldiers to fly over large areas stealthily, while the smoke jumping designs allows firefighters to reach into remote forest fires from low altitude.

From the 1980s onwards, the sport became more and more popular. This is also because with further technological developments, equipment used to skydive became more and more reliable, lightweight and easier to operate and maneuver. From there, sky’s the limit for people who wish to experience the adventure of free falling in mid air.

Appearing much safer, fun and accessible to almost anyone, skydiving has since established itself to be one of the most treasured leisure activity and extreme sport alike.

While diamonds remain the number one choice when it comes to an engagement ring, many couples prefer to take an alternative approach – choosing instead a unique gemstone, a family heirloom, or even moissanite, a lab-produced compound whose hardness is second only to diamonds.

For those who want to take a “something old” approach to the engagement ring, family heirlooms handed down from a mother or grandmother or a piece found at an estate auction are particular favorites for the future bride who wants to honor her traditions in a non-traditional way. In particular, antique styles and cuts, especially reset into platinum, have been strong sellers. Antique engagement rings are appealing to those brides who like to express their own style by wearing a ring that is truly unique.

For the girl who loves “something blue,” a splash of color for the engagement ring is another possibility. While colored gemstones are more unusual for the American bride, they have long served as the centerpiece for royal European families. Remember Princess Diana’s beautiful, 18-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 small diamonds? Less expensive blue gemstone alternatives include blue spinel, iolite and blue tourmaline.

According to the American Gem Trade Association, other popular colored stones chosen for engagement rings include the ruby, emerald, tanzanite, and garnet. The appeal of colored gemstones lies in the fact that each stone possesses a symbolic meaning, allowing the bride the truly express her personality. Ivana Trump, Jane Fonda and Kirstie Alley are just a few famous women who chose a colored gemstone engagement ring rather than diamonds.

Symbolizing faithfulness and continuity, green gemstones are an especially poignant choice for an engagement ring. Green gemstones include the emerald, green garnet or green tourmaline, with the emerald being the most prized stone. Ancients believed emeralds had healing powers and served as symbols to love, rebirth and eternal youth.

A truly historic association to love, rubies represent a heart of passion. The warmth of red reflects courage and the ability to take action without fear of reprisal – an especially good choice for a man confidant of his lover’s response to marriage. Part of the corundum family of minerals, rubies are rated a 9 on the Moh’s scale of hardness (diamonds rate a 10). In addition to rubies, tanzanite and garnet are other favored choices as well.

For the bride-to-be who loves color but may not want to take on such a daring choice as a ruby, colored diamonds are another exciting alternative. While available in a wide range of shades, “fancy” colored diamonds are considered rarer and therefore pricier than their white counterparts. The more common fancy diamonds come in yellow, pink, blue, and green.

Love the look of the diamonds but want something less expensive? Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is the most popular diamond stimulant on the market today. The man-made substitute possesses physical properties so close to the diamond that most people can’t tell the difference. While diamonds feature more brilliance than CZ, the alternative shows more fire (color) than the real thing. With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, a CZ ring can stand up to daily wear and is actually heavier than a diamond. Perfected in a lab, CZ offers a cut and clarity comparable to finer diamonds.

First discovered in a meteorite, moissanite is a colorless compound with similar qualities to diamonds. Now produced in labs, moissanite ranks over 9 on the Mohs scale and features a high level of fire, brilliance and luster – an ideal choice for the alternative engagement ring. More economical than a diamond, moissanite is gaining a celebrity following including actors Brooke Shields and Vivica A. Fox, as well as supermodel Niki Taylor. Given its ability to stand up to daily wear, it is also worn by well-known sports figures, such as Mia Hamm and Jackie Joyner Kersee.

Christmas isn’t too far behind us and when you think about how quickly a year goes by, it is fair to say that it isn’t too far ahead of us either. However, many of us are still hanging on to those gift cards we received, waiting for the right opportunity to spend them and figure out how to spend them. Chances are you received store-specific gift cards to your favorite music or movie store, which means you can spend them only on the items within that store.

Nevertheless, more people are buying universal gift cards (usually issued by Visa, MasterCard, and American Express) at department stores and malls to allow the gift recipient to spend their gift card wherever they would like. When you’ve got the store-specific cards to buy clothes and other specialty items, you can take your universal gift card and spend it on whatever you like. This gives you the chance to go to the mall and shop at multiple stores. You can tote around your shopping bags like you own the place. However, you can’t forget about the music and DVD store. Two of the most common items that universal gift cards are used to purchase are CDs and DVDs.

Instead of spending three days trying to illegally download a movie off of the internet, you can simply take your gift card and buy the real thing. The same goes for CDs. With the enforcement of piracy laws, more and more people are getting in trouble for downloading movies and music off the internet, so to avoid hefty fines and embarrassment; it is a good idea to take that gift card and buy the music and the movies that you want.

Also, buying movies and DVDs rather than downloading them reduces the chances that your computer will contract a virus as a result of the download. At one time, contracting viruses from downloads was not really a concern, but it was just a matter of time. But by using your Christmas gift card to buy your CDs and DVDs, you are protecting yourself by not getting caught for illegally downloading movies and music, and you are not putting your computer at risk. Both of these can be very costly, and all for the chance to acquire a movie for free.

Open yourself up to new entertainment possibilities. Buy a movie you always wanted to see or buy the CD of that artist you thought sounded great on the radio. Of course there are other items you can purchase with your Christmas gift card. No one can tell you how to spend it, but there are so many possibilities that exist when it comes to CDs and DVDs that there is always something that everyone likes because there’s plenty to choose from..

Just be sure to spend the gift card on yourself. So many people decide that they don’t want to purchase something that they can use and they will buy an item for their significant other, their parents, or a friend. The gift card was given to you as a gift to buy what you want. It wasn’t given to you to buy what someone else wants. You want that CD, all you have to do is buy it. If you want that DVD, go for it. No one can tell you how to spend your gift card.

So go into the clothing stores, buy a new outfit with your store-specific card. Go to your favorite bath and body store for some new scents, and then head over to your favorite entertainment store to get the CD or a DVD. Have a little fun.

January is always a depressing month after the excitement of Christmas. Why not use one of the gift cards you received to buy a CD or a DVD to cheer yourself up.

Southwestern lamps add great authentic design to rustic decor. Southwestern decor is a great choice for any home, but it does present its own set of problems, especially when it comes time to choosing the right lighting fixtures. But, lighting a rustic style home is actually easier than you think! Use western lamps that complement the rustic design you wish to create.

Sometimes you will discover southwestern lamps for sale in lamp stores, but you will have a greater chance of finding a wide selection to choose from online. The greatest part about choosing from these rustic lamps online is the freedom you have to customize your style when it comes to your home decor. With various rustic lamps to choose from, you will certainly find the right lamp to go with your rustic decorating.

When buying a rustic lamp for your ranch style home you will need to determine whether you will need a classic style lamp like an iron lamp, or if a decorative lamp such as an antler lamp or pottery lamp would better suit your needs. The lighting fixtures you use in your interior design, really depend on whether you are using them in a more elaborate rustic home or are just trying to generate a relaxed country look. Metal lamps with rawhide lamp shades, for example, are very refined, and are fabulous accent lighting when placed on beside tables.

If you are searching for a western style lamp that not only works well as a functional lamp, but also really enhances southwestern decor, log furniture or Native drum tables, then a one of a kind antler lamp is definitely the best choice. Genuine deer antlers found over the course of the season, provide the beautiful antlers used in constructing these terrific lamps and add a touch of rustic style to any room of your home.

Decorative Indian pottery is another fantastic way you can create Native American style in your home. A great option for pottery enthusiasts is a lamp made out of a real clay pot, hand-coiled by the Tarahumara Indians of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Northern Mexico.

After determining which kind of southwestern lamp best fits your decorating needs, whether an iron, antler or pottery lamp, you can then add more southwestern accessories. This will pull the look together and create the western style home you have always dreamed of.

The part you will enjoy most about decorating with western lamps is that they can be used in different parts of your home to create great southwestern design. No matter if your goal is simply to add a little Native American style to a living room, or if you are taking on a bigger task of decorating an entire home or cabin, you will love how you can succeed in creating authentic rustic design style by decorating with southwestern lamps.

Once upon a time, well, 1973 to be exact, a cop woke up after a terrible car accident to find himself barely injured. Trouble was, when he had his accident it was the year 2006. Hmm. Strange.

So Sam Tyler, a Detective Inspector from Hyde, Greater Manchester, found himself reporting for duty at the same police station he had left in 2006 but this time with no computers, no cell-phones, nobody he knows, just a stranger sitting in his office, with outdated ideas of strong arm policing, totally alien to Sam’s 21st Century attitude. That stranger is Gene Hunt, who will become Sam’s boss, a larger than life character who would think nothing of beating up a suspect, and often does.

Of course, Sam wonders what the hell has happened to him? Is he imagining all this? Is he in a coma back in 2006 and is his brain playing out some weird scene? Has he really somehow slipped back in time? All this action takes place in “Life On Mars” the amazingly gripping BBC series launched on an unsuspecting British public back in 2006.

An American version of the series was launched in 2008 on ABC, and while the first couple of episodes remained loyal to the original BBC script, and most characters names remained the same, later episodes veered away from the original and the American audience didn’t take to it in sufficient numbers to save it for a second season, so the episode airing April 1st was the series finale.

Back in the U.K., “Life On Mars” lasted two seasons, admittedly each of just eight episodes, but spawned a spin-off featuring three of the main “Life On Mars” characters, now set some 8 years further on in the early 1980s, where another 21st century cop, this time Detective Inspector Alex Drake, a very liberated female officer, finds herself face to face with Gene Hunt, Ray Carling and Chris Skelton after being shot in 2008.

Alex had been working on Sam Tyler’s case file ‘back’ in 2008 and knew all about his 1970s adventure with these same policemen so is convinced that she too is in a coma and her brain is recreating characters she had been reading about in Sam’s reports. With the demise of the USA version of “Life On Mars” it’s very unlikely that there will ever be an American version of “Ashes To Ashes”, so fans of the series will be pleased to know that it is now being shown on BBC America.

Both “Life On Mars” and “Ashes To Ashes” are songs by David Bowie. “Life On Mars” was playing on Sam Tyler’s iPod in 2006 and also on a car radio cassette player when he ‘woke up’ in 1973. Both series gave the producers the opportunity of playing some magnificent music from the seventies and eighties. Fan forums are buzzing with questions like “What songs were played on last night’s “Life On Mars?” or “Who sang “Love Action” on “Ashes To Ashes”? Soundtracks from both series have proved to be very popular.

In my opinion, both shows have created some of the most fascinating and gripping TV in recent years.
