The hillbilly music of the south is a genre of music that is beginning to grow at an immense rate throughout the United States. Originating in Bristol Tennessee, country music is a type of music that integrates the blues, jazz and originally some “hillbilly folk” with a bit of swing, and just recently some pop has been added to the sound. The lyrics represent the “faithfully charted vicissitudes of the working-class life; as Charlie Rich put it, “life’s little ups and downs”. The music is nearly 73 years old, and is just now starting to touch people.

In 1927, a man by the name of Ralph Peer signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, who would later set the sound for country music. Jimmie Rodgers was born in Mississippi and his favorite type of music to sing was “nigger blues”, which is what he brought to the country industry.

African American musicians wound up having a huge impact on the country music sound. Mainly because on one side there was the “colored section” and the “white trash” section. Because of how close the two communities were, the songs that each would sing would influence the other (Scherman, 1994). A lot of the African American sound can be heard through jazz and blues. Many of the early country artists were “hillbillies”, singing their folk music. However, country music is NOT folk music.

When Gene Autry went to Hollywood in 1934 and became “the movies first singing cowboy” the image of the cowboy stuck with the “hillbilly sound” (Scherman, 1994). Gene Autry’s biggest rival was Roy Rogers. Roy Rogers starred in over 100 movies and headed his own television show (Walker, 1997). Roy Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988.

It was only a few years later when he was on top of the charts once again (Walker 1997). In 1934, Rogers formed the Sons of the Pioneers, an early country western band (Walker 1997).

With the help of Bob Wills, western swing was born. “The style was a blend of big band, blues, dixieland, and jazz among others” (Walker, 1997). Originating in Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930’s (Walker, 1997). Bob Wills famous “falsetto cry” of “Ah-hahh” was adopted by the WWII American pilots, whenever the pilots would celebrate a hit. During this time, Southern California became America’s western swing capital (Scherman, 1994).

The United States is the largest world market for snack foods, consuming roughly a third of the total supply. The American snack food industry consists of more than 1,200 companies operating 1,465 plants and using over $ 11 billion worth of ingredients each year. From 2001-2006, snacking increased by 1.5% and skyrocketed another 4% just in the last year.

“Consumers are serious about these ‘meals’ being healthy. Simultaneously, manufacturers are serious about meeting consumer, watchdog and governmental demands to make snacks more nutritious, particularly those aimed at kids,” says Don Montuori from Packaged Facts market research company.

It’s surprising to some that snack food industries have skyrocketed during a time of recession, especially when snack food prices have increased anywhere from 4-11% over the last year, due to increased energy and commodity costs. However, consumers are flocking to Wal-Mart for their fair-priced trail mixes and coated snacks.

For the most part, weight management and nutrition headlines are driving consumer interest and demand for healthy snack foods, with 62% of consumers saying they eat foods to prevent or manage health conditions and 42% are seeking snacks with health benefits. Yet industry leaders add that the more indulgent treats still comprise two-thirds of all sales.

Nevertheless, today’s discerning consumer is looking for the snack food industry to offer products with no trans fat, low fat, low calorie, low cholesterol, low sugar, whole grain, low sodium, vitamins, minerals and organic or natural ingredients. Portion control products have really taken off, allowing consumers to still indulge in those zesty Doritos or chocolate cookies. Kraft was the original pioneer of calorie-control snacking, offering 100-calorie servings of Oreos, Thin Crisps, Chips Ahoy and Wheat Thin Minis.

Since then, chip manufacturers, soda pop makers and countless others have joined the club. Some portion-control products are simply smaller, made with the original recipe, while others have been manufactured a bit differently, using low-fat, low-sodium and low-cholesterol recipes.

The snack food industry, while revolutionizing and evolving, is still running into some trouble, particularly with high commodity prices cutting away at their profit margins. This year, wheat reached a historic $ 11.69/bushel because of poor weather conditions and pressure on land use, as more and more farms convert to corn growing to gain government subsidies.

Soybean oil has reached 67 cents/pound, which is double the normal levels, and is attributed to the use of soybeans for biodiesel and corn for ethanol. While not quite an emergency today, these issues will likely come up in future national snacking discussions.

Rita Sheese has been living and working in the Cozumel real estate market for over 20 years. She is President of the Cozumel AMPI association which is the sister organization of NAR in the United States and CREA in Canada. Rita’s background is as interesting as it is diversified, but basically reflects a dedication and passion in two fields: Real Estate and underwater activities.

We asked Rita about her back ground in the Mexico real estate industry which she responded that she was a one-hundred percent Mexican Caribbean specialist. “I began with my first sale of oceanfront properties in Cozumel in 1985, and those led to more real estate transactions, which also led me into the area of property management.” She added. When she first started on the island not too many properties were on the market. But as the years passed a demand from international buyers to acquire and to retire to Cozumel increased. “I enjoy very much meeting and helping newcomers from outside of Mexico, and helping them find the perfect property match.” Rita explained. She has become very active in the community and in the realtor’s association, called AMPI here in Mexico. She explained “I became a member of AMPI shortly after the Cozumel chapter was formed 7 years ago”. Today she is serving as its President as well as serving on the Municipal Urban Planning Commission and the Foundation for Strategic Planning for the Island of Cozumel.

“Living in Cozumel is an absolute blessing. I think many people came here for the same reason I did. That being: the water, the people, and the island air.” Cozumel still has a small town atmosphere on the island that makes day to day living very comfortable and unpretentious in comparison to mainland life. And no matter where you go on the island, the views of the Caribbean ocean are not out of site for long. In terms of living, the Mexico real estate agent pointed out “it is a place where you can easily understand the local culture; it is a Real Mexico, without being at an unreachable part of Mexico.” The international airport allows the option to jump on a plane from many parts of North America and arrive quite easily to the island to begin enjoying small-town living. And once you arrive at the International Airport in Cozumel, you have immediate access to all parts of the island. Everything is nearby.

Apart from the local market, the majority of buyers are Americans and Canadians. Rita states that “many of the buyers are looking for an island community, a life that is tranquil, they want beautiful waters. Many of the people who buy or invest here in Cozumel are divers or snorkelers and appreciate the accessibility to some of the best dive spots in the world, while others aren’t necessarily sportive but just love to be surrounded by the gin-clear turquoise waters of this island.” The island of Cozumel offers the retiree and resident many activities. A Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, marinas for deep sea fishing, sailing, and scuba diving are available. Snorkeling, kit board sailing, wind surfing, trekking along the beach are all popular past times activities shared on the beachfronts. Dining and socializing in the street side cafes and restaurants are common in the little downtown sections of the city.

Considering the leniency of America’s weapons laws, it might seem like a no-brainer that you can carry that new Bowie knife out in public. However, before you head out the door, you should stop and check your state’s laws governing knife carrying in public. While Bowie knives might not be mentioned specifically, you’ll find that there are rules governing blade length and method of carry for all knives and some knives are excluded almost universally. You’ll find that quite a few states take a dim view of butterfly knives (balisongs), as well as switchblades and other automatic knives. Bowie knives are no exception to this rule.

As an example of the laws governing knife carry in the US, let’s look at the state of Colorado. This state allows pocketknives to be carried both openly and concealed, so long as they have a blade shorter than 3 and 1/2 inches in length. They also allow fixed blade knifes and dirks/daggers, so long as the blade is shorter than 3 and 1/2 inches. Of course, your Bowie knife is likely a bit longer than this, as the blade should be at least 6 inches long to qualify as a Bowie. Therefore, you cannot carry your Bowie knife in public within Colorado, whether concealed or in the open.

Another example of the great disparity between state laws concerning knives is Arizona, in this state, you can carry any type of knife openly, including Bowie knives and even automatic knives. However, they have to be worn outside of your clothing and sheathed, unless it is a small pocketknife.

In addition, you’ll find that Arizona lets individual cities and towns create their own laws governing what knives can be carried and how they can be carried legally. Therefore, should you travel from Flagstaff to Tucson, you might find that your knife is not legal. Check ahead to avoid legal problems.

Remember, though, it is illegal to carry any sort of weapons into a school, into a bar or club, or into a courthouse. Of course, there are other areas where carrying a weapon is prohibited, but these usually vary by state law, as well.

Dylan Sabot is the owner of an online bowie knifes store featuring Cold Steel bowie knives for sale . Additionally, Dylan is also the President of a specialty butane lighters store.
